OPENJYOTISH PRIMER, CHAPTER 3: YOGAS AS DETECTED
================================================
Original synthesis by the OpenJyotish contributors (AGPL-3.0, like the
program). Doctrine restated from the public-domain texts in this folder;
formation rules describe this program's detector exactly
(`jhora yogas`, Yogas tab) — run it on the reference chart below and
compare line by line before trusting a word.

A yoga ("union") is a combination whose whole exceeds its parts: a
placement pattern with a promised outcome. This program detects
families, never single-planet dignities; every result carries a
category and a strength (medium/strong). Houses below are whole-sign
from lagna, matching the detector.

1. PANCHA MAHAPURUSHA (FIVE GREAT COMBINATIONS)
----------------------------------------------
Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn — in its own or exalted sign —
placed in a kendra (houses 1, 4, 7, 10) from lagna forms Ruchaka,
Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya or Shasha respectively. The native rises in the
planet's field: commanders, scholars, counselors, artists, organizers.
Conditions are strict on purpose: the same planet elsewhere gives
talent without eminence. The detector requires own-or-exalted sign AND
kendra placement together; either alone yields nothing.

2. GAJA KESARI (ELEPHANT-LION)
------------------------------
Jupiter angular from the Moon (kendra houses 1, 4, 7, 10 counted from
the Moon's sign) forms Gaja Kesari: intelligence allied with fortune,
respect late in life, resilience after falls. The wider the angular
separation within kendra limits, the cleaner the effect; combustion or
debility of either planet muddies it. The detector measures
Moon-to-Jupiter house distance and reports only kendra placements.

3. DHANA YOGAS (WEALTH COMBINATIONS)
------------------------------------
Lords of the wealth houses (this detector scores houses 2, 5, 9 and 11
as wealth anchors) placed in beneficial houses form Dhana Yoga: money
through the affairs of the occupied house. A 9th lord in the 7th, for
example, links fortune with partnership. Strength follows the lord's
dignity (Primer Chapter 1): an exalted Dhana lord enriches, a
debilitated one promises and delays.

4. RAJA YOGAS (ROYAL COMBINATIONS)
----------------------------------
Kendra lords (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona lords (1, 5, 9) in mutual
conjunction, exchange (parivartana) or aspect form Raja Yoga: status,
authority, rise in career. The detector reports the participating lords
and houses; parivartana (mutual exchange of signs) is graded strong,
conjunction medium. A Raja Yoga with both lords well-placed dominates a
chart; the same pattern involving dusthana lords (3, 6, 11) gives rank
without peace.

5. VIPARITA RAJA YOGAS (REVERSAL COMBINATIONS)
---------------------------------------------
Lords of the trik houses (6, 8, 12) placed in their own sign, or two
trik lords conjoined, form Viparita Raja Yoga: success through
adversity — inheritance after litigation, promotion after demotion,
recovery after illness. The detector reports both formations: single
lords in own sign, and every qualifying pair in conjunction. These are
the most commonly listed yogas in real charts and the least understood:
they promise nothing without a preceding difficulty.

6. MOON- AND SUN-FLANKING YOGAS
-------------------------------
Planets (other than the luminaries) in the 2nd from the Moon form
Sunapha, in the 12th Anapha, in both Durudhara; from the Sun the same
positions form Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari. They describe the company a
luminary keeps: flanked luminaries act supported, isolated ones act
alone. Caveat: several classical schools exclude Rahu and Ketu from
these yogas; this program's detector lists whichever planets occupy
the flanking houses, nodes included — read node entries as emphasis
markers rather than classical formations.

7. WORKED EXAMPLE
-----------------
Reference chart: 1990-01-15, 17:30 IST, Bangalore (Gemini lagna). The
detector reports, verbatim:

Dhana Yoga [medium] — Saturn as lord of house 9 in house 7.
Viparita Raja Yoga [medium] — Mars as lord of trik house 6 in own sign.
Viparita Raja Yoga [medium] — two trik lords (Sun, Venus) in conjunction.
Viparita Raja Yoga [medium] — two trik lords (Sun, Rahu) in conjunction.
Viparita Raja Yoga [medium] — two trik lords (Venus, Rahu) in conjunction.
Parivartana Yoga [strong] — exchange between Mercury in Sagittarius
and Jupiter in Gemini.
Anapha Yoga [medium] — planets in 12th from Moon: Ketu.
Vosi Yoga [Sun-based/medium] — planets in 12th from Sun: Mercury, Saturn.

Read them: Saturn (9th lord) in the 7th promises fortune through
partnership, delivered during Saturn periods. Mars owns Scorpio, the
6th from Gemini, and sits in it — Viparita through conflict won.
Mercury (lagna lord) and Jupiter exchange Gemini and Sagittarius: the
chart's single strong Raja Yoga, intellect trading places with wisdom.
The node conjunctions (Sun–Rahu, Venus–Rahu, Moon–Ketu) mark where
unconventional disruption enters wealth, love and mind respectively.

8. YOGAS IN TIME AND IN THE PROGRAM
-----------------------------------
A yoga sleeps until a period lord involved in it runs its dasha
(Primer Chapter 2): Saturn's Dhana Yoga pays during Saturn antardasas,
the Mercury–Jupiter exchange during either planet's periods. Slow
transits over the yoga's planets trigger months, never years.
Findings live in the Yogas tab, `jhora yogas`, the Dashboard strengths
panel and the AI anchor; every yoga an AI answer names is verified
against this detector before display.
