OPENJYOTISH PRIMER, CHAPTER 4: STRENGTHS — SHADBALA, VIMSOPAKA, BHAVA
======================================================================
Original synthesis by the OpenJyotish contributors (AGPL-3.0, like the
program). Component definitions describe this program's calculators
exactly; every number below is live engine output on the reference
chart (1990-01-15, 17:30 IST, Bangalore) — reproduce with
`jhora shadbala "1990-01-15 17:30:00 +0530 12.9716 77.5946"`.

1. SHADBALA (SIXFOLD STRENGTH)
------------------------------
One rupa equals 60 virupas; all six components sum to the total. The
program reports both. Classical minimum rupas for a planet to deliver
its significations fully: Sun 5, Moon 6, Mars 5, Mercury 7, Jupiter
6.5, Venus 5.5, Saturn 5. Below its minimum, a planet gives its results
late, partially, or through the significations of stronger planets.

STHANA (positional): dignity in rasi and vargas — exalted, moolatrikona
and own-sign placements score highest (see Primer Chapter 1 for the
ladder this program uses).
DIG (directional): full strength on one axis — Sun and Mars strongest
in the 10th, Moon and Venus in the 4th, Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st,
Saturn in the 7th. Directional strength shows where a planet acts
without resistance.
KALA (temporal, a set of sub-strengths): weekday lordship, month, year
and hora lordships, day/night strength (Paksha, Tribhaga and Naisargika
day-night rules), and Abda/varsha components. Kala answers WHEN a
planet is strong, not where.
CHESTA (motional, also a set): speed and retrogression state, solar
proximity (combustion weakens, exact retrograde midpoints strengthen),
bright/dark fortnight placement. Chesta answers HOW a planet moves.
NAISARGIKA (natural): fixed inherent potency — Sun strongest, then
Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn weakest. Independent of
any chart; the baseline every planet carries.
DRIK (aspectual): benefic and malefic special aspects received,
computed from the program's aspect model.

Reference values, computed: Sun 487.1 virupas (8.12 rupas), Moon 372.5
(6.21), Mars 340.5 (5.67), Mercury 319.4 (5.32), Jupiter 412.2 (6.87),
Venus 343.9 (5.73), Saturn 520.8 (8.68). Saturn leads. Note Mercury at
5.32 rupas stands BELOW its classical minimum of 7 — the one genuinely
weak planet here (speech, nerves and commerce significations suffer
regardless of its Gemini/Virgo rulerships); the rest clear their minima,
so their weakness is relative, never absolute.

2. VIMSOPAKA (VARGAS STRENGTH OUT OF 20)
----------------------------------------
Each divisional chart (varga) awards a planet a share of its weight
according to dignity in that varga: full weight for exalted or
moolatrikona, scaled fractions down through own, friendly and neutral
to zero for debilitated or inimical. Four schemes weight the vargas
differently (this program's exact weights):

Shadvarga (6 vargas, total 20): D-1: 6, D-2: 2, D-3: 4, D-7: 5, D-9: 3.
Saptavarga (7 vargas, total 20): D-1: 5, D-2: 2, D-3: 3, D-7: 2.5,
D-9: 4.5, D-30: 3.
Dashavarga and Shodasavarga extend the same principle to 10 and 16
vargas (see `jhora shadbala --scheme`).

Reference values, Shadvarga scheme, computed: Sun 10, Moon 10, Mars 13,
Mercury 10, Jupiter 10, Venus 12.5, Saturn 13 (all of 20). Read them as
divisional consistency: Mars and Saturn hold dignity across charts
(13/20), while Sun, Moon, Mercury and Jupiter at 10/20 are average —
competent in rasi, undistinguished in vargas.

3. BHAVA BALA (HOUSE STRENGTH)
------------------------------
Five components per house: Sthana (occupants' positional strength),
Drishti (aspects received), Dig (directional — houses 1, 4, 7, 10 at
full value), Adhipati (the house lord's own strength), Drig (special
planetary aspects). Reference totals, computed: H1 and H8 tie at 203,
H4 at 201. Houses near 200 are robust; houses far below the chart's own
average deserve caution when their affairs are promised in dashas.

4. READING STRENGTH
-------------------
Strong planet, weak house: talent without opportunity — the native can
but circumstances withhold. Weak planet, strong house: opportunity
without talent — doors open that the native cannot yet walk through.
Both strong: the period lords of Primer Chapter 2 deliver cleanly.
Both weak: even favorable dashas underperform; remedies (Primer
Chapter 8) aim here first.
Never compare raw virupas across planets: each graha has its own
minimum and its own natural baseline. Compare a planet against its own
minimum, a house against the chart's average, a vimsopaka against 20.

5. WHERE STRENGTHS LIVE IN THE PROGRAM
--------------------------------------
Strengths tab (Shadbala table with component breakdown, Bhava Bala,
Vimsopaka per scheme), Dashboard strengths panel (ranked bars),
`jhora shadbala` (add `--bhava --vimsopaka --scheme saptavarga`),
conversation anchor (totals the AI reads), and the verification note
(every strength number in an AI answer is checked against these
computations before display).
