OPENJYOTISH PRIMER, CHAPTER 6: AFFLICTIONS — KUJA, SADE SATI, KALASARPA
==========================================================================
Original synthesis by the OpenJyotish contributors (AGPL-3.0, like the
program). Kuja rules describe this program's detector exactly (verified
live on the reference chart below); Sade Sati doctrine extends Primer
Chapter 5; Kalasarpa is classical doctrine the program does not
auto-detect — stated plainly as such.

1. KUJA DOSHA (MARS AFFLICTION)
-------------------------------
Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house forms Kuja Dosha,
read from three points: lagna (the native's body and temperament),
Moon (mind and married life) and Venus (love and comfort). Affliction
from lagna strikes conduct, from Moon strikes the marriage itself,
from Venus strikes affection. Any one of the three counts; all three
together is severe.

This program reports all three views separately — from_lagna,
from_moon, from_venus — with Mars's house counted from each. Read the
strongest afflicted point as the battlefield and the clean points as
reserves.

2. CANCELLATIONS (ENGINE RULES)
-------------------------------
Not every placement burns. This program weakens or cancels the dosha
when:

- Mars sits in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn):
  a dignified Mars fights fair.
- Jupiter aspects or conjoins the affliction (jupiter_cancels): wisdom
  supervises energy.
- Mars rules good houses for the lagna (lagna_cancels): for Cancer and
Leo ascendants Mars rules trine/quadrant houses (5th/10th, 4th/9th)
and the dosha reads as drive, not damage. For Gemini and Virgo
ascendants Mars rules dusthana houses and no such relief applies —
check the lagna table in the program's own calculator.

Classical tradition lists further cancellations (Mars in certain
houses from Venus, mutual dosha in both partners' charts, age and
remedy based). The detector implements the three above; the rest
belongs to consultation, and an honest reading says which is which.

3. WORKED EXAMPLE
-----------------
Reference chart: 1990-01-15, 17:30 IST, Bangalore (Gemini lagna, Mars
in Scorpio). The detector reports: dosha present from the Moon,
weakened by Mars in its own sign Scorpio — overall verdict: no full
Kuja Dosha. Read it: the Moon (mind, marriage) takes Martian fire, but
a dignified Mars converts the affliction into managed intensity rather
than damage. Gemini lagna gives no lagna-cancellation (Mars rules the
dusthana 6th), so the relief comes entirely from dignity, not from
lordship. Reproduce with `jhora kuja-dosha` style outputs, the
Kuja/Mangal panel, or the Dashboard dosha line.

4. SADE SATI (SUMMARY — SEE CHAPTER 5)
--------------------------------------
Transit Saturn through the 12th, 1st and 2nd from natal Moon:
expense and displacement, then the peak of self and health, then
family and income — seven and a half years total. The 4th and 8th
transits (Dhaiya) press for two and a half years each in a lesser key.
Never predict Sade Sati from the natal chart alone; it is purely a
transit condition, and this program reports the live verdict on the
Dashboard from current Saturn against natal Moon.

5. KALASARPA YOGA (DOCTRINE, NOT AUTO-DETECTED)
-----------------------------------------------
All seven grahas hemmed on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, with no
planet outside their arc, forms Kalasarpa Yoga: life organized around
unfinished karmic themes, breakthroughs delayed then sudden, foreign
and unconventional elements prominent. Twelve named varieties exist
(Ananta through Shankachuda) according to which house the serpent's
head occupies. This program does not auto-detect it — check manually:
list all seven longitudes and confirm every one falls within a single
180-degree arc from Ketu to Rahu. Treat internet-era fatalism about
this yoga with skepticism; classical texts give it weight, not doom,
and a strong lagna lord overrules much of it.

6. READING AFFLICTIONS
----------------------
Afflictions describe friction, never fate. Always state all three
together: the affliction, its cancellation status, and the dasha that
would activate it (Primer Chapter 2) — Mars periods light Kuja Dosha,
Saturn transits light Sade Sati. An unafflicted chart needs no remedy;
an afflicted one needs the right remedy (Primer Chapter 8), not fear.
Astrologers lose their reputation fastest here: never predict marital
disaster from Kuja Dosha alone, never predict ruin from Sade Sati
alone, and say plainly when the engine finds nothing.
